SPRINGFIELD, IL — Joined by Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Deputy Director of Highways, Region One Engineer Diane O’Keefe at Byron Colby Barn in Lake County, Senator Michael Bond (D-Grayslake) announced a major renovation of U.S. Route 45 in Grayslake today. The $11 million project will relieve the severe traffic congestion plaguing the region.

“I’m pleased to bring about this solution to one of our areas largest traffic problems,” said Senator Bond. “This route has become a major thoroughfare and the highway, as it is now, is simply incapable of handling the volume of commuters.”

The project will add two additional lanes in each direction and a turn lane at various intersections of U.S. Route 45 from Route 137 to Route 120. The project will also improve the safety of the roadway by installing a raised barrier median and updates to traffic signals as well.

“This area of Lake County is home to several blue chip corporations and a major economic engine for the county and the state,” said IDOT Secretary Milton R. Sees. “This project will make the flow of goods and services, as well as the daily commute easier.”

Over 19,000 vehicles per day travel along U.S. Route 45 in the heart of Lake County. Fortune 500 corporations including Motorola and Baxter are major employers in the region.

“IDOT’s goal is having the safest and best transportation in America and we thank Senator Bond for his efforts to make the goal a reality,” said Deputy Director of Highways, Region One Engineer Diane O’Keefe.

Weather permitting, the project will begin in the fall of 2009 and is expected to be completed in 2010
